If this resort could talk, oh the stories it would tell! Here are a just a few!
The Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort is more than just a desert oasis or a luxurious gem in the heart of Tucson. It is living history; a 34 acre art gallery; a wine-lover's dream; a culinary hot spot – and so much more! Here are examples of just a few stories that can be found in and around the hallowed grounds of this amazing property.
Historic Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort Added Rooms and Amenities yet Maintained Classic Feel. In October 2015 a much anticipated expansion of the resort was completed. The project included the addition of 32 guestrooms (including two two-bedroom suites), a negative edge pool complete with a full-service outdoor bar, and the gorgeous Casa Luna Ballroom.
The new Catalina rooms and suites rival the beauty and uniqueness of the historic rooms and bring the resort's room count to 59. Every room has a patio with a spectacular view of the mountains or cityscape; most have both views and six have private, outdoor showers. It can be said that 32 new spa suites were added to the resort as each room was designed to accommodate in-room spa treatments. This allows guests to absorb the rejuvenation of a treatment within view of the stunning Catalina Mountain vistas and slink off to relax in an uber-comfy chair or bed upon completion.
The new negative-edge Catalina Pool area provides access to comfortable swimming and lounging year-round with the most coveted views of Tucson's Santa Catalina Mountains for up to 100 guests. A dedicated bar and close proximity to the main kitchen and guest rooms, make this space is ideal for intimate gatherings, weddings, and photo opportunities. The jaw-dropping sunrise and sunset backdrops are always complimentary!
The brilliant new Casa Luna Ballroom comfortably seats up to 260 guests and boasts a spacious patio with stunning city views. Inside, the ballroom features gorgeously integrated design elements that include 15-foot ceilings, state-of-the-art AV systems, a dedicated kitchen, and an optional dance floor.
Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort Exemplifies Tucson's UNESCO World City of Gastronomy Designation. Classically trained and regionally experienced Chef Bruce Yim leads a team of brilliant culinary minds and hands at the helm of Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort's award winning restaurant The Grill, Terraza Garden Patio & Lounge, and catering kitchen. Our culinary team incorporates ingredients and ideas inspired by the bounty of the on-site organic garden (inspired by Dr. Andrew Weil, designed and nurtured by owner/partner Jeff Timan) and the herbs and citrus grown throughout the Resort's 34 acres to present a unique selection of New American Cuisine to diners and event guests.
The Global Alliance's Creative Cities Network, a UNESCO program, designated Tucson as the 2016 World City of Gastronomy due, in large part, to the region's 4,000 year agricultural history and current practices to preserve and support culinary tradition and industry. Tucson is the first U.S. city to receive this prestigious designation. Long prior to Tucson's addition to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network program, Chef Bruce and the Hacienda Del Sol culinary team were sourcing ingredients and inspiration locally and seasonally to introduce guests to and comfort them with the their unique New American Cuisine often accented with exotic twists.
The Hacienda Del Sol's Wine Program – Where Sommeliers are Born! The wine program at the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort has long been touted as the finest in the region and is, in fact, a draw for those seeking to deepen their wine knowledge and experience. The resort's owners are passionate about tasting, exploring, and enjoying a variety of the finest wines from around the world with our guests as demonstrated by weekly wine events and monthly tastings. The Hacienda Del Sol wine cellar delivers palate pleasing liquid luxury with a selection of over 700 wines hand selected by the Resort's owners and Director of Wine and Spirits, John Kulikowski. With origins ranging from the Bio Bio Valley to Bordeaux, Argentina to Spain and Arizona to Maine, the expertly chosen, presented, and paired vintages have earned the Hacienda Del Sol "The Award of Ultimate Distinction" by Wine Enthusiasts Magazine and "Best Of Award of Excellence" designation from Wine Spectator for 18 consecutive years. Adding to the talent and the deep well of knowledge offered by our Director of Wine and Spirits, there are always at least three Sommeliers on staff – drawn here to expand their knowledge of and experience with the myriad vintages available.
The Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort – A Piece of Living History. Hacienda Del Sol Ranch School for girls was opened in 1929 by John and Helen Murphey to offer an exotic Western getaway while shaping the minds of girls from across the country. One of several boarding schools of this kind in the area, The Hacienda Del Sol Girls School roster listed the names of some of the country’s most elite families: Vanderbilt, Pillsbury and Westinghouse. The school closed in 1942 due to a teacher shortage and the widespread economic strain of World War II. Today guests can enjoy a glimpse of times past through photos throughout the resort and visiting or staying in the Historic rooms that once served as student dorms. While walking the grounds guests may find themselves drawn to the principal's office which not houses the unique offerings of our gift shop.
In 1948, Hacienda Del Sol was converted into a guest ranch that immediately attracted the Silver Screen’s most notable stars, among them John Wayne and Clark Gable. Legend has it that Hacienda’s Casita Grande was the favorite hideaway of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Professional baseball players Lou Boudreau, Hank Greenberg and well known golfers, Sam Snead, Horton Smith, John Bulla and Don January enjoyed the ranch in the 1940’s. In 1995, Hacienda del Sol was purchased and thoughtfully renovated by a group of local investors and became the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort.
The Hacienda Del Sol is a 34-Acre Art Gallery. As if the spectacular mountain vistas, the meticulously maintained gardens, and the sparkling nighttime city views afforded by the perfect positioning of the resort weren't enough, the Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resort also boasts a robust art collection throughout the property. A combination of loaned, consigned, purchased, and custom designed pieces in varying media adorn public spaces – some are quite obvious while others are hidden in plain sight. Curated by Resort Partner/Director of Gardening and Art, Jeff Timan and his wife and Gift Boutique Manager Robyn Kessler, featured artists include Rigsby Frederick, Steven Derks, and Carlos Carulo, to name a few. Many pieces – recognizable by the medium of welded steel and an abstract nature – were created by Timan himself. The nearly 40 pieces of public art don't only occupy outdoor spaces. A stroll through The Grill at Hacienda Del Sol will bring you face to face with a number of paintings and sculptures including a glass sculpture created by renown glass blower, Zak Timan, son of the Director of Gardening and Art.

Non-toxic and immeasurably safer for use than many systems, the product dries in five minutes, lasts well, and does not require use of a UV light to set. Chef's Garden and Edible Landscaping. If Executive Chef Bruce Yim isn't in The Grill or Catering kitchens, he can likely be found divining inspiration from the hundreds of edibles found in the Chef's Garden or around the resort grounds. The Chef's Garden, developed by Jeff Timan, Resort Partner/Director of Gardening and Art in partnership with friend (and resort neighbor) Dr. Andrew Weil, thrives nearly in the dead center of the property (near the Hepburn/Tracey Casita.) Now under the watchful eye and skilled hands of pastry chef turned gardener Melanie Zettel, the garden's soil is still turned, and its bounty planted and picked by Timan and Weil on occasion. As with all gardens, some inhabitants cycle in and out with the seasons while other, hearty herbs are year-round mainstays. Visitors will find mint, tomatoes, basil, kale, carrots, peppers, oregano, and many other of nature's finest offerings within the fences of the approximately 800 square foot plot. Keep an eye out while wandering around our lush grounds. You'll likely find a number of edibles hiding in plain sight, and of course, are welcome to take a ripe offering for yourself. Around the property, at the right time of year, limonium, oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, kumquats, variegated lemons, rosemary, and society garlic are just a few of the amazing offerings that can be found for the taking or in various forms in dishes and drinks at the The Grill or Terraza Garden Patio & Lounge. Of course, the garden and grounds cannot support the thousands of dishes served to Hacienda Del Sol Guest Ranch Resorts diners and event goers, but that doesn't stop them from serving as inspiration and even as ingredients for exclusive dishes, drinks, and events!
